Potty Training Your Pomeranian: What to Expect and How to Do It Right!

Let’s be honest. Pomeranians are not known for being quick to potty train. Their tiny size, stubborn streak, and fast metabolisms mean this stage often takes more time, more consistency, and more patience than some new owners expect.

But don’t worry - it can be done successfully. With structure, repetition, and the right setup, your Pom can absolutely learn where and when to go potty. The key is understanding that this isn’t an overnight process. If you want a well-trained dog, you have to put in the groundwork.

At Country Life Pomeranians, we pen-train from the beginning and set our puppies up with a routine that helps them succeed. But once they go home, it’s your job to stay consistent. That means committing to a routine, watching their signals, and sticking to it even on the days it feels frustrating.

Here’s what you need to know to start off strong:

🛏️ 1. Choose the Right Pen & Make it a Safe Place

Skip the oversized crate or open room. Pomeranians thrive with defined space. Too much room = accidents. Set up a crate or pen that’s just large enough for them to turn, stretch, and rest. Add soft bedding and a toy, but avoid anything absorbent that encourages accidents like blankets.

⏰ 2. Use a Consistent Routine - Even If It Feels Repetitive

Potty training a Pom is all about structure. Let them out first thing in the morning, after naps, after meals, after play and again before bedtime. If they don’t go, back into the crate for 15 minutes and try again. It’s tedious, yes - but it works.

🚶‍♀️ 3. Be Ready for Frequent Breaks

They’re small, and their bladders are even smaller. Don’t expect your Pom to “hold it” the way a large breed puppy might. Until 6+ months, they’ll need regular potty breaks throughout the day and night. It’s not personal, they physically can’t wait.

🎉 4. Reward Immediately, Every Time

Praise them the second they potty in the right spot. No waiting, no delay. Use your voice, give a treat, and let them know they did the right thing. If you only reward “sometimes,” they’ll be confused, and so will your carpet.

🐾 5. Don’t Rush the Freedom

Your Pom earning free roam of the house is a long-term goal...not a Day 3 reward! Expand their space slowly as they earn it with consistent success. The more you stick to the system now, the fewer accidents (and bad habits) you’ll deal with later.

Final Thoughts

Pomeranians are smart, but they can also be stubborn, easily distracted, and slow to mature when it comes to house training. If you want quick results, this might not be the breed for you. But if you’re patient, consistent, and willing to stick with it, you’ll be rewarded with a loyal, joyful companion who fits beautifully into your life.

At Country Life Pomeranians, we’re here to support you - not just at pick-up day, but through all the real-life phases that come next.
