Owning a Pomeranian comes with a lot of love, fluff and brushing. I wanted to take a moment to share important insights on grooming routines, coat care, and what to look for when choosing a Pomeranian puppy. These tiny companions may be small in size, but they require thoughtful care and attention to grow into happy, healthy, and beautiful adults.

✨ Maintaining a Fluffy, Healthy Pom Coat

Let’s talk grooming.Ā A Pomeranian’s coat is their crown, and it needs consistent care at home...not just at the groomer’s. Without regular brushing, their fur can become matted or even form dense, compacted areas that hide under the surface… or under the couch.

Top Tips for Coat Care Between Groomings:

  • Brush 2–3 times a week A consistent brushing routine helps prevent matting, distributes natural oils, and keeps their coat in top condition.

  • Feed high-quality food Nutrition matters. After 12 months, transition your Pom from high-quality puppy food to a high-quality all-life-stages formula. Budget-friendly kibble may meet basic nutritional needs but often lacks the nutrients to support coat health. Since small breeds prioritize vital organs, their coats are the first to show signs of nutritional deficiencies.

  • Stick with puppy food until at least 12–18 months A Pomeranian’s adult coat develops over their first 1–1.5 years. Keeping them on puppy food during this hormonal development supports the dense, plush coat they’re known for.

  • Choose a groomer before bringing your Pom home Not all groomers are experienced with Poms. Be sure to ask about their experience with the breed and confirm they do not shaveĀ Pomeranians. Shaving can lead to permanent alopecia (hair loss). Look for a groomer who can hand-scissor a proper breed-standard cut.

🐶 How your poms adult coat will look even with top quality care comes down to genetics! If you’re adding a Pom to your family, it’s important to do your research and take your time finding the breeder and parent dogs to your future pup. Here is a comprehensive outline on what to look for as you search for planned litters and quality breeders and making predictions as to their final look.

Here’s what to look for:

🩷 Coat Quality & Development

  • Dense, plush coatsĀ as puppies often indicate a full adult coat to come.

  • Sparse or silky coatsĀ may stay flatter and lack the signature Pom fluff.

  • Color may changeĀ as your puppy grows, especially in sables and merles.

🩷 Ear-to-Coat Proportion

  • Puppies with small ears relative to their headsĀ often grow into the round, teddy bear look.

  • Larger earsĀ tend to stay more prominent as they mature.

🩷 Face & Nose Shape

  • A short noseĀ gives a compact, teddy bear-style face.

  • A longer noseĀ offers a foxier look.

  • Round headsĀ appear more baby-faced, while flatter heads create a sleeker profile.

🩷 Body Structure & Proportions

  • Look for a square buildĀ (1:1 shoulder to rump ratio).

  • Balanced leg-to-body proportion creates proper movement and structure.

  • Compact bone structure ensures strength and longevity. Always take a close look at the parents’ builds to see what traits the puppy might carry forward.

Why These Details Matter

These subtle traits are what shape a puppy into a truly well-bred adult Pomeranian. If you ever have questions about coat care or choosing the right puppy for your lifestyle, I’m always happy to help. These aren’t just puppies—they’re our babies first.

Warmly,
